Seven years ago I named my farm “Fair Cow’s Path Farm.” The farm has grown HUGELY since this was originally posted and a shorter name surely would be better… Or would it? Why lose the love and excitement and magic?
The reasons I listed, seven years ago, for choosing this name were:
- It was necessary to rename my farm
- ‘The Fair Cow’s Path’ is the Irish name for the Milky Way Galaxy. For those of you who don’t know, I am of Irish decent, my last name being VERY Irish!
- I have a heifer (a future brood cow) that was named “Little Luna” at birth. Luna is Latin for moon. I have a new, week old heifer (also a future brood cow) that’s been named Stella, finding out after naming her that Stella is Latin for stars!
- My big, pretty cow, “Jasmine” is named after a flower that blooms in the dark (I know this is a stretch, but she had to be included somehow… Also, she’s black… I know, I know :P)
- On clear nights, you can see stars forever here and I love looking at them!
- I love stars, I have star shapes everywhere in my house!
- It is common for named livestock to share a “theme” amongst them. Naming future babies after celestial happenings should be easy, as there is seemingly no end to the sheer amount of them!
- It is poetic, charming, and beautiful.
- A pretty farm sign can easily be made, and the mailbox painted accordingly.
- There are no other places that share this name, that I can find any how, save a pub in Ireland!
- If I can get it, my brand will be the letter “H” where there’s a star in place of the horizontal line. Or something similar, having to do with an “H” and a star.
Now I have more brood cows with names that go with the theme. I got that cattle brand I talked about getting and we had an awesome farm logo made at the end of 2019 (thanks, Will Paulus!). Still need to get the mailbox painted and a farm sign made, but… baby steps.
